Maybe you’re just not a competitive person, hell, I know I do stuff best when I don’t know how others are doing. It doesn’t even matter if they’re actually better than me, I feel bad when I compare myself to people.
On another note (just a personal opinion), I’ve went to Shanghai before (2010 world expo) and I have to say I don’t really like it there. It’s not the weather (I’m Taiwanese, even Japan is too dry for me) it’s just everything is too loud and harsh. I dunno, but I think Shanghai is not for everyone.
